You’d forgotten about it, you’d pushed it into the darkest recesses of your brain and thought ‘that will never happen,’ but it is! Barbie, written and directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie, is coming.
Or at least it will be. Soon. Soon-ish.
A per Variety, the live-action Barbie is set to enter production in 2022, with an eye to release the film in 2023. So with the wheels now officially in motion, what will a live-action Barbie film actually look like? We’ve collated all the information about the upcoming film below.
Life in plastic, it really is fantastic!
Greta Gerwig will (officially) both direct and co-write Barbie
Barbie was first announced nearly two years ago, where it drove a lot of buzz as the project Greta would be focusing on after the release of the critically lauded Little Women.
She was first attached as a co-writer on the film alongside her partner, the director Noah Baumbach, but now it’s been announced that Barbie will also function as her third directorial feature.
And what’s more, Birds of Prey star Margot Robbie is also attached to star as Barbie. It’s the titular role!
Margot Robbie is aware the title character comes with her own “baggage”
In an interview with British Vogue, Robbie confirmed that the project - which is also being produced by her company, LuckyChap - is taking on a controversial figure in certain regards.
“[Barbie] comes with a lot of baggage!” She told the publication. “And a lot of nostalgic connections. But with that come a lot of exciting ways to attack it.
“People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t…’”
The iconic doll serves as kind of a bastion for outdated and unrealistic beauty standards. Therefore we can at least assume that the actress’ comments (and, to a larger extent, Greta’s involvement) mean that Barbie will be getting something of a post-modern rehabilitation in the new film.
Who will play Ken?
Where Barbie goes her loyal fella Ken must surely follow, although no casting decisions have been made as of yet. Could we see Greta Gerwig staple Timothee Chalamet take on the role? What about Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story leading man Adam Driver? Or maybe, just maybe, much like in Toy Story 3 (no really, stay with us) Barbie will find out she never really needed a Ken in the first place.
When is Barbie set to be released?
Barbie is set to be released sometime in 2023, with production looking set to begin in earnest next year in London.
